What Happens Before a Ceramic Coating Goes On

The paint prep steps that decide how good it looks — a stage-by-stage checklist you can use to compare quotes and get your car ready.

Most people booking a ceramic coating are picturing the last twenty minutes of the job: someone in gloves wiping a small bottle of liquid glass across a hood. That part is real, and it's the least interesting thing that happens to your car that week.

A coating is optically clear, and it bonds to whatever surface it finds. It adds gloss, it makes water bead, it resists chemicals and UV — but it has no opinion about swirl marks, embedded brake dust, or a water spot etched into the clear coat. Whatever is underneath is what you'll be looking at, sealed in and protected, for years.

Which means the honest answer to "how good will my coating look?" is decided before the coating is ever opened. Here's the full prep sequence, in order, with what each stage actually fixes — plus the questions that turn two very different quotes into a fair comparison.

The Prep Sequence at a Glance

  1. Inspection under proper lighting — reads the paint and sets how many correction stages it needs.
  2. Deep wash and degrease — removes everything loose, including wheels, trim, and door jambs.
  3. Chemical decontamination — dissolves embedded iron and tar that washing can't touch.
  4. Clay treatment — shears off the bonded contamination left behind, leaving glass-smooth paint.
  5. Machine paint correction — levels swirls, haze, and etching so the coating has a flawless surface to amplify.
  6. Panel wipe — strips polishing oils so the coating bonds to clear coat, not residue. The easiest step to skip.
  7. Controlled application and cure — panel by panel, leveled by hand, cured undisturbed indoors.

Six of those seven stages happen before a drop of coating touches the car. That ratio is the whole point of this article.

Stage 1: The Inspection That Sets Everything Else

Before anything is decided, the paint gets read under strong, raking light. In flat garage light almost every car looks fine; under inspection lighting you can see swirl density, haze, etched water spots, sanding marks from a past repair, and the difference between factory paint and a panel that's been resprayed.

That inspection answers three questions that drive the entire job: how many correction stages the paint needs, whether any panel is too thin or too damaged to safely polish, and which coating tier makes sense for how you actually drive. It's also why a firm coating price quoted sight-unseen should make you suspicious — whoever quoted it is either padding for the worst case or planning to skip the correction. Worth Knowing

If you've already tried to hide defects with a filler glaze or an all-in-one polish, say so. Fillers mask fine scratches for a few weeks and make it genuinely difficult to read the true condition of the paint during inspection — which can lead to a quote for less correction than the car actually needs.

Stages 2-4: Getting the Paint Truly Clean

"Clean" for a coating job means something stricter than clean for a wash. The clear coat has to be chemically and physically bare, because anything left on it becomes the bonding surface for a product designed to stay put for years.

Deep Wash & Degrease

A thorough foam wash and hand wash, plus wheels, wheel wells, door jambs, and trim. Coatings go on more than just the hood and doors, so the areas that never get attention in a normal wash have to be cleaned first. Road film and any old wax or sealant come off here too.

Iron & Tar Decontamination

A chemical iron remover dissolves the ferrous particles embedded in the clear coat — brake dust from the I-93 commute, rail dust from transport — and a tar solvent takes the rest. This is chemistry, not scrubbing, and it lifts contamination no wash mitt will ever reach.

Clay Treatment

Clay shears off what's left: overspray, industrial fallout, tree sap, and the last of the bonded grit. The test is your hand inside a thin plastic bag — if the paint still feels gritty, the clay step isn't finished. When it feels like glass, the surface is ready to be polished.

There's a hard rule buried in that order: polishing contaminated paint drags embedded grit across the panel and installs fresh scratches. Decontamination always comes before correction — never after, and never instead. A shop that goes straight from wash to polisher is manufacturing the defects it's about to charge you to remove.

Stage 5: Correction — Where the Look Actually Comes From

Paint correction is controlled removal. A machine polisher and a progression of compounds and pads shave away a few microns of clear coat until the surface is level with the bottom of the scratches. Level surface, uniform reflection, gloss returns. Our correction work removes up to 90% of surface defects — light scratches, swirl marks, oxidation, and etched water spots.

Correction is the stage that decides how the coating looks. Everything after it — the wipe-down, the application, the cure — is about preserving this finish rather than improving it.

How much correction your car needs isn't a preference, it's a condition. A brand-new vehicle off the transport truck usually needs one light polishing stage; shipping and dealer prep leave their own marks. A five-year-old daily driver that's been through brush washes needs more, and genuinely tired paint may need compounding, refining, and a finishing pass. Two limits are worth setting expectations on now. Correction can't restore a scratch that has gone through the clear coat into the color layer — if your fingernail catches in it, polishing won't remove it completely. And correction is bounded by how much clear coat there is to work with; a good shop measures, and stops short rather than cutting through to make a better before-and-after photo. A coating over 95% corrected paint is an excellent result. A coating over paint that was polished until it was thin is a problem you can't undo.

Stage 6: The Panel Wipe Almost Nobody Asks About

This is the step that separates a coating that bonds from one that fails early, and it's invisible in every before-and-after photo ever posted.

Polishes contain lubricating oils. Those oils stay on the paint after the polishing is done, and while they're there they fill fine defects and make the finish look slightly better than it is. A coating applied over that residue bonds to the oil rather than to your clear coat — and when the oil eventually breaks down, the coating loses adhesion in patches, and the "corrected" paint underneath turns out to still have the hazing the oils were hiding.

The fix is a solvent panel wipe: every corrected surface is wiped down to strip the oils, then inspected again under light to confirm the correction is real. If defects reappear after the wipe, that panel goes back under the polisher. Only then does anything get coated.

Ask This One

"Do you do a solvent panel wipe after correction and re-inspect before coating?" It's a short question with a very revealing answer — and it costs a shop almost nothing to do right, and a great deal to skip.

Stage 7: Application and Cure — Why the Room Matters

Now the coating goes on: applied panel by panel and leveled by hand, with surface-specific coatings for glass, wheels, and interior surfaces applied in the same session where the package includes them. Then it cures undisturbed, gets a final inspection under proper lighting, and the warranty gets registered.

The environment isn't a luxury detail here. Dust and pollen landing on wet coating become permanent inclusions. Direct sun and heat change how fast the coating flashes, which is how you get high spots — streaky, hazy patches where the coating set before it was leveled. Cold slows the cure. Rain during the cure window can mark the finish. Your installer should give you a cure window and a maintenance schedule when you pick the car up. Follow both. Your Half of the Prep: Before Drop-Off

The shop handles the paint. There's a short list on your side that makes the job go faster and the result better, and none of it takes more than fifteen minutes:

  • Rinse off heavy mud, sand, or road salt — especially wheel wells and rockers. You're not washing the car for them; you're keeping the worst of it out of their wash water.
  • Don't wax, seal, or spray-ceramic it first. It all comes off during decontamination, and it obscures the paint during inspection.
  • Empty the car. Personal items, car seats, garage remotes, roof boxes, and anything in the trunk that would stop jambs and edges from being reached.
  • Point out repaints and touch-ups. Aftermarket paint behaves differently under a polisher and can be softer or thinner than factory. Telling your detailer up front protects the panel.
  • Flag anything you want handled differently — a badge you plan to remove, vinyl or PPF already on the car, trim you've already tried to restore.
  • Plan for the calendar, not the afternoon. Proper prep plus application plus cure is a multi-day job for most vehicles. Arrange the ride now rather than being surprised on day two.
  • Ask what the first few weeks look like. Get the cure window, the wash instructions, and the inspection schedule in writing while you're standing there.

Six Questions That Make Two Quotes Comparable

Coating quotes are hard to compare because the words are identical and the work isn't. These six questions expose the difference, and any shop doing the job properly will enjoy answering them:

  1. How many correction stages are included, and based on what? A real answer references your paint's condition. A vague "we'll polish it" usually means one quick pass.
  2. Are iron decontamination and clay included, or add-ons? If they're optional, they're being treated as optional.
  3. Do you panel wipe and re-inspect after correction? The single best tell on the list.
  4. Where does the coating cure, and for how long? Indoors, temperature-controlled, undisturbed — or outside under a canopy.
  5. How many days will you have the car? A same-day coating on a driven car means stages got cut.
  6. What's the warranty, and what keeps it valid? Ask what maintenance and inspections are required. A warranty with no conditions is usually a warranty with no substance.

Notice that five of the six are about prep and only one is about the coating itself. That's the correct ratio, and it's roughly the ratio in the price too. What Bad Prep Costs You Later

The reason prep gets this much attention is that a coating is durable by design. That's the feature, and it's also the risk: mistakes don't weather away, they get locked in.

  • Sealed-in defects. Swirls and etching under a coating are still swirls and etching, now with a hard clear layer over them that has to come off before anyone can fix them.
  • Locked-in contamination. Iron particles that were coated over keep corroding underneath the coating.
  • High spots and streaks. Coating that wasn't leveled before it set reads as smears in direct light — at every angle, on exactly the panels you look at most.
  • Early adhesion failure. Coating bonded to polish residue instead of clear coat sheds in patches, and the beading goes blotchy long before the warranty period is up.
  • A more expensive redo. Correcting any of the above means machine-polishing the coating off first, then doing the prep that should have happened the first time.

And one habit undoes good prep faster than anything else: taking a freshly coated car back through an automatic brush wash. A coating makes washing easier and safer, not unnecessary — those brushes are still dragging the last hundred vehicles' grit across your paint. Do I need paint correction before a ceramic coating?
In almost every case on a car that's been driven, yes. A coating is optically clear and adds gloss on top of whatever surface it bonds to, so swirl marks, haze, and etched water spots stay visible underneath and get sealed in for years. On a brand-new vehicle the correction may be a single light polishing stage; on a neglected daily driver it can take several. The amount of correction, not the brand on the bottle, is where most of the price and most of the final look come from.
How long does the prep before a ceramic coating take?
Longer than the coating itself. Washing, iron decontamination, clay, machine correction, and the final panel wipe are hours of hands-on labor and typically spread the job across more than one day, with the coating application and its cure at the end. A shop offering a same-day ceramic coating on a dirty, uncorrected car is skipping stages — because those stages take the time they take.
What is a panel wipe and why does it matter?
A panel wipe is a solvent wipe-down that strips polishing oils and residue off the paint after correction and before the coating goes on. Polishes leave behind lubricating oils that temporarily fill and mask fine defects, and a coating applied over them bonds to the residue instead of the clear coat. It's the least visible step in the whole process and the easiest one to skip, which is exactly why it's worth asking about.
Should I wash or wax my car before dropping it off for a coating?
A rinse to knock off heavy mud or road salt is helpful, but don't wax, seal, or apply a spray ceramic beforehand. Everything sitting on top of the paint has to come off during decontamination anyway, and fresh filler products make it harder to read the true condition of the clear coat during the inspection that sets your quote. Clearing personal items out of the vehicle and pointing out any repainted or touched-up panels is far more useful.
Can a ceramic coating be applied outdoors or in a driveway?
Coatings are meant to be applied and cured in controlled conditions, which is why we do this work in our climate-controlled shop. Wind-blown dust, pollen, direct sun, temperature swings, and rain during the cure window all affect how a coating levels and bonds, and a driveway controls none of them. Manufacturer warranties assume the coating was installed and cured correctly.
What happens if the prep is done badly?
Whatever was on or in the paint gets locked under a durable layer. Bonded contamination, swirl marks, and etched spots stay visible, and high spots or streaks left in the coating itself show up as smears in direct light. Fixing it isn't a re-wax — the coating has to be machine-polished off before the paint can be corrected and coated properly, so a bargain coating over bad prep often costs more in the end than doing it once.

The Bottom Line

A ceramic coating is a preservation product, not a repair product. It takes the condition your paint is in on the day it's applied and holds it there — wonderful news if the prep was done properly, and a long-term annoyance if it wasn't.
